myON works with a variety of publishers in education to provide access to quality literature through our various collections. When adding titles to myON, the content curation team follows the expertise and guidance of our publishing partners regarding appropriate reading level, interest level, and subject-matter suitability. We also understand that some topics are appropriate for different audiences based on the local guidelines, requirements, customs, culture, and norms of the communities that we serve. Educators need to be empowered with choice and control for their students, keeping educators at the center of those decisions. Therefore, we provide school administrators with tools to control access to titles as needed.
Settings for Managing Your Book Collection
Group Administrators
Group administrators can use the settings to manage when students can read books above their year and whether school administrators can set minimum years for specific books and hide some collections.
To get to these settings, group administrators select My Group, then Group Settings.
Then, select the Account Options tab.
Then, go to the Library Management section of the Account Options page. The first few settings let you set which years are allowed to read books above their year (based on the book publisher's recommended years for each book), whether school administrators are allowed to set minimum years for books, and whether students are allowed to read books above their year when teachers have assigned those books in an assignment. Note that each setting lets you choose what school administrators can do to manage book collections. Note: If you do not allow school administrators to set minimum years for books, any minimum years set by the group administrator apply to all schools; remove the tick in this box if you want the group administrator to set restrictions for all schools.
The last Library Management setting lets you choose whether school administrators can hide some book collections for students in their school.
When you have finished changing the settings, select Save at the top of the page.
School Administrators
For school administrators, the settings that are available depend on the choices that the group administrator has made.
To go to the settings, school administrators select My School, then School Settings.
Then, they select the Settings tab.
Go to the Library Management settings. Depending on the choices the group administrator made, you may be able to choose which years are allowed to read books above their year in your school and whether students may read books above their year when those books are assigned through assignments.
When you have finished changing the settings, select Save at the top of the page.
Managing Book Collections for a School
If the settings allow school administrators to choose which book collections are available in their school, school administrators can hide some book collections. For more information, see How to View School Information and Collections (School Administrator).
Setting Minimum Years for Books
To set minimum years for books, follow the steps below:
- If the group administrator sets the minimum years for all schools, the group administrator selects My Group, then Group Settings, and then Books.
If the settings allow school administrators to set minimum years for books, as a School Administrator, My School, then School Settings. Then, select the Books tab. - Using the search options, you can search for a book in a book title or series or by collection, a minimum year setting that is already in place, publisher, series, or release date.
In the Release date drop-down list, you can choose to focus on books released in the past month, 3 months, 6 months, or year. You can also choose to see pre-release books that are not yet available to teachers and students if you prefer to preview books regularly before students see them.
- Select Search.
- You will see the books that match your search criteria. For each book, you will see the title, description, minimum year (if one was already set), series, publisher, and collection. You will also see the date that the book was released to students and teachers; for pre-release books, the date is highlighted in orange as shown below. You can select the title to view book information, and you can add the book to your favorites using the link below the description. If you want to open the book, select Read. The Share options allow you to copy the book link, add the book to an assignment, or add the book to a bundle.
To set minimum years for some books in the list, tick the box to the left of each of those books. Then, select the Set min year of selected to drop-down list and choose a minimum year. Students in that year and higher will be allowed to find and read the book(s). If you choose No Access, no students or teachers can find or read the book(s). After choosing a setting, select Save.
Note: If you are a school administrator and this drop-down list is not available, the group administrator does not allow school administrators to set minimum years for books.
After you save your settings, the new minimum years will be shown for each of the books under "Set min year". If "All Years" is selected for a book, you will simply see a dash.
School administrators and group administrators can also set a minimum year for individual books. To do so, find the book in your library by browsing or searching; then, select the book. In the bottom left corner of the book information window, use the drop-down list to set a minimum year for the book. Note: School administrators will not see this drop-down list if group administrators do not allow them to set minimum years for books.
