Once an assignment has been assigned to a student, the student can see and complete the assignment by following these steps:
- Students see assignments in two places:
- The assignments that are assigned to students are listed when they log in. New assignments are marked with the orange "New" banner in the list. The student selects the assignment name.
- Students can select Assignments at the top of the page to see their assignments. Assignments with the red not started icon have not been started. Those with the yellow icon showing some progress have been started, but are not finished. Those with a green icon that is fully filled in are finished. The activity icons on each assignment are in the same colours to show you which ones are not started, in progress or finished. To work on an assignment, the student selects the assignment.
Students only see assignments until the due date set by the teacher or administrator who created it.
- The assignments that are assigned to students are listed when they log in. New assignments are marked with the orange "New" banner in the list. The student selects the assignment name.
- Once an assignment is open, the student can see which assignment activities still need work. Activities with the red icon have not been started. Activities with the yellow icon have been started, but are not done. Activities with the green filled icon are done. In this example, the student has finished reading books and articles about the solar system, but the writing activity is in progress. To work on an activity, the student clicks it.
Reading and News Activities
Reading activities include books and news articles. For books, the student selects a book, then selects Read to start reading the book. For news articles, the student simply selects the article to open it and start reading. Once you start reading books, you will see an indicator of your progress under each book; for news articles, you will see an indicator above each article.
Oral Response Activities
For oral response activities, students select the activity, then select Open Record Mode.
The instructions for the oral response open. The student selects Start Recording.
The student may see a message telling them that myON needs to access the microphone. In the browser message that opens, choose Allow.
Typically, the browser will ask for access to the microphone; it may also ask you to select the microphone to use. If this does not happen, you may need to allow microphone access in the browser settings, perhaps in the security settings or the settings for a specific website. (See the help for your web browser for details.) You may also need to check your operating system settings for the microphone.
If you are using Safari, version 14.02 or higher is required.
If you are recording from an iOS device, you may need to turn off SiriĀ® and turn it on again in order for audio recording to work.
The student gives their oral response. As they record, they will see the seconds count up. When they finish, they select Stop.
After the student stops the recording, they will see the message "Recording made". They can choose Listen to myself to hear their recording (and select Stop when they finish). If they are not satisfied with the recording or with their response, they can select Record again to start a new one. When the student is satisfied with the response and ready to send it to their teacher, they select Submit Oral Response.
After submitting the recording, the student will see a message telling them it has been turned in. They can still play the recording if they want to hear it again. The student selects Back to close the oral response activity.
Writing Activities
For writing activities, students select the activity. Then, they read the instructions, enter a title for their writing, and enter the text. If a checklist is included, students can tick each box as they finish the work.
If the student needs to add a peer review to another student's writing, they select Peer Review to the right of the writing activity. The Peer Review panel will open on the right side of the page. The student selects the writing to review on the left, then enters a peer review; when they have finished, they select Submit Peer Review. Then, they select the arrow at the top of the window to go back.
Students can also select Dictionary to open the dictionary on the right so they can look up words as they write. If students have created Journal entries, the Journal icon is available, and students can select it to refer to their journal entries as they write.
After working on the writing activity, the student selects either Save for Now to save the work without submitting it or Submit Writing to mark the activity finished and submit it to the teacher.
Graphic Organiser Activities
For Graphic Organiser activities, students select the activity on the left. Then, they can read the instructions, enter the Topic, and enter text in the Graphic Organiser. When the student has finished, the student selects Save for Now if they plan to continue work later or Submit Graphic Organiser if they are ready to submit the graphic organiser to the teacher.
Custom Activities
For custom activities, the student simply selects the activity and then selects Mark Completed when the activity is complete.
Completed Assignments
Once a student finishes all activities in the assignment, they have finished the assignment, and the status on the Assignments page will show the student this.
