As the School Administrator in myON, you can follow the steps below to set the adjustable settings for your schools only. Note that the Group Administrator can change these settings for all schools.
The School Administrator can set which years can take AR quizzes, write book reviews, and access Literacy Centre tools. The Group Administrator may also allow School Administrators to set when students can read books above their year. Depending on your subscription, your School Administrator may also be able to set access to myON news articles with certain flags. School Administrators can also choose which metrics are shown to students and on the myON with Star report, the default interface language, and whether students need to link Star tests. These settings affect your school only.
- At the top of any myON page, select My School, then School Settings.
- Select the Settings tab.
- Make your changes to settings in the sections described below.
- When you finish changing the settings, select Save in the top right corner of the page.
Quizzes and Reading Tools
In the Quizzes and Reading Tools section, tick the box next to an activity (myON book quizzes, AR Quizzes, Book Reviews, Literacy Centre and Student Journal or Student Recordings) to allow each activity. If the box is ticked, use the drop-down lists to choose which years can do that activity. Enabling the Literacy Centre also gives years access to literacy tools.
Library Management
In the Library Management section, you can manage some library settings if allowed by the group administrator. You may see up to three Library Management settings:
- Decide which years are allowed to read books that are above their year (based on the recommended years for each myON book). Select the first option if you want to choose a unique setting for your school; then, use the drop-down list to choose the lowest year that is allowed to read books above their level; in the example below, year 3 is selected. If you prefer to use the group or account-level setting, select the second option; the lowest year that can read above year is shown.
- Choose whether teachers can assign books in their assignments that are above students' years. This allows students to read the books as part of an assignment, even if the books would normally be restricted for the students.
myON News Management
The group administrator can choose to allow school administrators to manage some myON News settings. If that is allowed, you can change the settings as described below; if not, the group settings will be shown, and you cannot make other selections.
-
Sensitive Content: Some myON News articles have a sensitive content flag because they may relate to violence. If your group administrator has allowed you to choose the setting for your school, you can choose whether to set the minimum year at which students in your school can read those news articles, or you can choose to use the group setting. Select one of the options; if you choose to use your own setting, in the drop-down list, choose the lowest year that should have access to news articles with that flag. Students in that year and higher years can access the articles. If you choose "No Access", no students or teachers can access the articles (teachers are not affected by year-specific settings).
-
Legislation-Related Content: Some news articles have a legislation-related content flag because they refer to topics that are regulated in schools by some legislatures. As in the sensitive content setting, you can choose your own settings for your school or use the group setting for these articles. Students in the year you selected and higher years will see the news articles; younger students will not. "No Access" means no students or teachers can access the articles.
Displayed Metrics
In the Displayed Metrics section, tick the metrics that you want students to see and that you want to see in the myON with Star report. You may choose up to four. Note: ATOS ZPD is always selected.
Interface Language
In the Interface Language section, choose the default language for the software in the left column; in the right column, tick the languages that you want available to students. Based on the languages that you select here, students can select the language they want to see using a drop-down list in the footer of their myON pages.
Placement Tests
In the Placement Tests section, tick the box if you want students to be asked to log in to their Star accounts to link their Star scores with myON. Remove the tick mark if you do not want students to be asked to log in to their Star accounts, and you want them to use myON without their Star scores. (If your school is using Star Reading or Star Early Literacy, and students open myON through the Renaissance Home page, you do not need to tick this box because students' Star scores are automatically brought in to myON.)
